Why You'll Love This Cookie Dough

    • Quick and easy - This no-bake recipe is insanely quick and easy to make with only five ingredients. It's ready to enjoy by the spoonful in just five minutes!
    • Sugar cookie flavor - Every bite of cookie dough is rich, buttery, sweet, and full of sprinkles for the best sugar cookie flavor.
    • Single serving - This recipe is perfect for a single serving, but can easily be made for two, three, or four people to enjoy!
    • No brown sugar - You only need granulated sugar and no brown sugar.
    • Safe to eat - When you use heat-treated flour and no eggs, this edible sugar cookie dough is totally safe to eat without baking.

    Ingredients

You only need 5 simple ingredients to make this sugar cookie dough. Remember to see the recipe card at the end of the post for all ingredient information.

All ingredients to make the cookie dough recipe prepared in small dishes.
    • Salted butter - Using salted butter means you don't need to add extra salt to the recipe. Vegan butter or normal butter works well. Make sure it's room temperature.
    • Granulated sugar - This adds the perfect sweetness to the sugar cookie dough!
    • Vanilla extract - Pure vanilla extract creates the best flavor.
    • Flour - All-purpose flour or gluten-free all-purpose flour works well. Make sure to heat-treat the flour before using it in the recipe. This makes the dough safe to eat.
    • Sprinkles - Use your favorite sprinkles to add some crunch and color to the dough. You can get creative with other mix-ins, too!

    Step-by-Step Instructions

You won't believe that it only takes 5 minutes to make this recipe! Here are step-by-step instructions for how to make edible sugar cookie dough without brown sugar:

    A bowl of heat-treated flour.

STEP 1: Heat treat the flour by microwaving it in four 20-second increments, stirring between each increment. This kills anything unsafe in the flour. Then, let the flour cool.

Creaming the butter and sugar together in a bowl.

STEP 2: In a mixing bowl, use a rubber spatula or mixer to beat the softened butter and sugar together. Then, stir in the vanilla extract until soft and creamy.

Adding flour to the bowl of butter and sugar.

STEP 3: Gently mix in the cooled heat-treated flour until a soft sugar cookie dough forms. If it is too thick, you can add a splash of milk or water.

Mixing rainbow sprinkles into the edible sugar cookie dough batter.

STEP 4: Fold in the sprinkles with a rubber spatula until evenly combined throughout the dough. Chill the dough to firm it up, or enjoy it right away.

STEP 5: Transfer the sugar cookie dough to an airtight container and keep it in the fridge to enjoy throughout the week. You can enjoy it cold or at room temperature.

    Expert Recipe Tips

    • Let the flour cool - After heat-treating the flour, let it cool for 5-10 minutes before mixing it into the cookie dough. This prevents the butter from melting from the hot flour and gives the best cookie dough texture.
    • Cream the butter and sugar - While not required, creaming the butter and sugar with an electric mixer incorporates air into the dough and creates an even texture.
    • Adjust the consistency - If you like soft and creamy cookie dough instead of thick dough, you can add a splash of milk or water to adjust the consistency.
    • Chill the dough -  Chilling the dough is optional, but thickens it further and makes the graininess from the granulated sugar less noticeable. There's nothing better than a spoonful of chilled sugar cookie dough straight from the fridge!
    • Balance sweetness and saltiness - Sugar cookie dough should be sweet, but not overpowering. You can add an extra ¼ teaspoon of salt to balance the sweetness to your liking.
A jar of cookie dough shown from above with sprinkles.

    Cookie Dough Variations

There are so many fun and easy ways to customize the cookie dough to your liking!

    • Brown sugar - The recipe is made without brown sugar to keep it simple and easy, but you can use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar if you want the cookie dough to have a rich caramel-like flavor.
    • Flavored extracts - Try using almond extract, butter extract, or lemon extract instead of vanilla for an easy flavor twist.
    • Sprinkles and toppings - Switch up the sprinkles you use or omit them entirely and add M&Ms, chopped nuts, mini chocolate chips, cookie chunks, caramel pieces, or anything else that sounds delicious!
    • No butter - You can use softened cream cheese if you want to make edible cookie dough without butter. Dairy-free versions work well too!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you eat raw sugar cookie dough?

Most cookie dough recipes contain raw eggs and flour, which are not safe to eat uncooked. However, this cookie dough recipe is eggless and uses heat-treated flour making it safe to eat raw.

What is the difference between cookie dough and edible cookie dough?

Regular cookie dough meant for baking often contains eggs, flour, and leavening agents like baking powder that are not intended to be consumed raw. Edible cookie dough, however, does not contain eggs and uses heat-treated flour. It is completely safe to enjoy without baking!

Can I make the cookie dough with melted butter?

Using softened butter instead of melted butter gives the cookie dough its classic thick texture. You can use melted butter that has been cooled, but the cookie dough will have a much softer and creamier consistency.

Is this cookie dough recipe for one person or two?

The recipe makes one small jar of cookie dough that can be enjoyed by one person throughout the week, or two people in a couple of days. It depends on how much you want for yourself, but there is plenty to share!

A spoonful of cookie dough shown from above.

    Storing & Freezing Cookie Dough

Store leftover cookie dough in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-7 days. Enjoy a few bites throughout the week for an easy and delicious dessert!

For longer storage, you can freeze the sugar cookie dough. I recommend scooping the dough into balls and freezing them between layers of parchment paper for easy enjoyment later. You can also store the entire batch of cookie dough in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow the dough to thaw at room temperature for 1-3 hours before enjoying it again.

    Equipment

    • 2 Mixing Bowls

    Ingredients

    • ¼ cup salted butter, softened (see notes for vegan option)
    • ¼ cup granulated sugar
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • ½ cup all-purpose flour heat treated (see notes for GF option)
    • 2-3 tablespoons sprinkles optional

    Instructions

    • To heat treat the flour, microwave it in a bowl for four 20-second intervals, stirring in between each one. Let the flour cool for 5-10 minutes. Alternatively, spread the flour on a clean baking sheet and bake at 350°F for 5 minutes, stirring halfway to eliminate any bacteria.
      ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • In a medium-sized bowl, use a rubber spatula or an electric mixer to cream together the softened butter and sugar. Then mix in the vanilla extract until smooth and creamy.
¼ cup salted butter, softened, ¼ cup granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • Add the cooled, heat-treated flour and mix gently until a thick sugar cookie dough forms. If it's too thick, add a splash of milk or water.
      ½ cup all-purpose flour
    • Gently fold in the sprinkles or other mix-ins of your choice. Enjoy right away or store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
      2-3 tablespoons sprinkles

    Notes

Storage: Store leftover sugar cookie dough in an airtight container in the fridge for 4-7 days. For longer storage, scoop the dough into balls and freeze in an airtight container for up to 3 months. Separate each layer with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Let the dough thaw at room temperature for 1-3 hours before enjoying it again.
Vegan: Use vegan stick butter and vegan sugar, like organic cane sugar or coconut sugar instead of granulated.
Gluten-Free: You can use gluten-free all-purpose flour instead. Make sure to heat-treat the flour so the dough is safe to eat.
Mix-ins: Sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, crushed cookies, and M&M candies are all delicious additions to the sugar cookie dough. Get creative and have fun with toppings!
Flavored extracts: Try using almond extract, butter extract, or lemon extract instead of vanilla for an easy and delicious flavor twist.
Baking: It's not recommended to bake the edible cookie dough because it does not contain egg or any leavening agents. Enjoy the cookie dough raw, it's completely safe to eat and makes a great treat!

Love this cookie dough! I've been trying more no-bake recipes lately because I'm too lazy to bake an entire cookie recipe and get out the mixer. This is the perfect dessert that I can make in a few minutes and the crunch of the sprinkles is the perfect touch! I used vegan butter and gluten-free flour and it came out great.

So yummy. Made it with the kids and needless to say they couldn’t get enough of it! Next time I want to chop up some Oreo cookies and mix those in for a “cookies and cream” sugar cookie dough. Thanks for such an easy recipe.

This sugar cookie dough is super yummy. I was really craving a sweet dessert but was too lazy to get the mixer out and everything else. This hit the spot and was so quick to make! Love the sugar cookie flavor and the sprinkles added a nice crunch. It's rich so you only need a few spoonfuls and can save the rest for later! Edible cookie dough is always 10/10.
